Headline from The Express newspaper (07.01.2015)
“Mum, 37, sheds five stone thanks to hypnosis app: 'I never dreamed it would be so easy'”
This wonderfully uplifting headline was taken from a national paper and shows the amazing power of suggestion and hypnosis as an aid to significant and sustainable weight loss. Although this lovely lady managed to shed such a large amount of weight by allegedly, only but very diligently using a hypnosis app she did have a big advantage. Living in Abu Dhabi, she admits to having had nothing else to do but lay in the sun and listen to her downloads.
How many of us in truth have that luxury of this amount of space and time?
That is, of course, not to take anything away from her success or the undeniable power of hypnosis. The power of repeated suggestion is the way that the brain is programmed. Any competent hypnotherapist will send their weight loss client off armed with a CD or download to diligently listen to every day at home.
And those clients that do practice can certainly celebrate a similar level of success. But the question is could everyone achieve this level of success without the hypnotherapist?
There are various pieces of research that make very positive conclusions about the awesome possibilities of hypnosis. For example:
A meta-analysis (a study of studies) by Kirsch, Montgomery and Saperstein conducted and published in 1995 compared and analysed six studies relating to obesity and concluded that:
"The addition of hypnosis substantially enhanced treatment outcome"
These researchers particularly noted that participants of these studies who had been included in research groups that included the use of hypnosis, continued to perform particularly well at follow-up. These participants also continued to lose weight after the treatment ended. This is why I choose to offer weight loss groups that continue the support and focus of a client after the main hypnosis sessions have ended.
So in my opinion and experience the potential of hypnosis is without question.
However, although the app is an amazing addition to the toolbox of anyone that wants to lose weight, in my professional opinion - and experience - one also needs to address an individual’s lifestyle, beliefs and mechanisms of motivation in order to ensure lasting change.
Food and weight is often a complex issue and includes a myriad of often entwined beliefs, emotions, personal experiences, behaviours and attitudes not only to food but to the self and life in general. Therefore, weight loss that is permanent and indeed sustainable without continuous dieting and self-punishment absolutely must address some if not all of these issues. Therefore, the need for a good hypnotherapist is not only paramount but undeniable in my opinion.
Hypnosis and visualisation, whether that be by means of app or download then becomes the tool that constantly reinforces self-belief and positive mind programming.
In conclusion then it is the combination of a continuous underpinning of new beliefs and programmes after the clearing and healing work has been completed with the therapist that ultimately results in positive and permanent lifestyle changes.
The truth is that it doesn’t have to be this (therapist) or that (app).
Often the best remedy is this and that!
