So what's the problem?

What has brought you to a site about clinical hypnotherapy? Do you have an issue with something or maybe somebody you know has a problem? Would you like to know if clinical hypnotherapy can help? Or would you like to know what to expect at a session?

I know I’d like to know as much as possible before I visited someone whom I didn’t know or what they would they do. After all, I wouldn’t want someone to enter my brain and ‘fiddle with it’, would you? I wouldn’t want to suddenly start behaving strangely when I heard someone click their fingers, would you? Definitely not. The very good news is that clinical hypnotherapy isn’t like that at all. It doesn’t do those things to you, neither does it do the hundreds of other myths you may have heard.

The benefits of hypnotherapy

So let’s start with the issues it can help with. I call them issues because for some people they have problems and for others, they have what they consider to be minor issues. No problem or issue is too big or too small for a clinical hypnotherapist to try to help you and I do mean ‘try to help you’ because although clinical hypnotherapy is a wonderful therapy, there are no guarantees in this world and it would be very wrong for anyone to say they could definitely help you.

But there are great successes being achieved with this form of therapy. Do you or someone you know need some help? If it is something that affects life in any way at all, it needs to be dealt with, no matter how big or small it seems. Someone’s problem may seem big to them but it could seem small to someone else. It is a very individual perception.

Reasons to have hypnotherapy

There are so many reasons to visit a clinical hypnotherapist; do you suffer from stress or panic attacks? You don’t always need to know the reason behind these feelings, sometimes it is deep-rooted in something that happened in your past or even recent past. It can be an incident or a few casual words spoken by someone.

The subconscious mind takes in everything we hear, say and do but sometimes it gets confused and misinterprets something and it can cause a problem with us analysing the world around us. Stress is often the underlying problem with so many issues. It can cause or aggravate panic attacks, agoraphobia, eating problems, it can also prevent people from stopping smoking. It is well known that the majority of cases presented to doctors are linked to stress. Stress is often the reason behind insomnia or people waking during the night and being unable to get back to sleep.

Phobias are another situation where the subconscious has misread a previous situation and has gone into ‘overprotective mode’. In certain situations this can cause stress, it can prevent people from going out if they are scared of birds or hinder the family holidays if they are terrified of flying. The list goes on and on where phobias can hinder someone’s enjoyment of life.

Confidence and self-esteem are all affected by our past experiences; again the subconscious can hold onto false information leaving us feeling dreadful about our selves and doubting our own capabilities.

So with all these negative things hammering at us and our subconscious, can anything be done about it? Most definitely yes! Clinical hypnotherapy can often help people with any of these situations plus many many more, even nail-biting (which if you think about it is often linked to nerves, habits or boredom).

Inside a hypnotherapy session

I mentioned earlier about wanting to know what happens at a clinical hypnotherapy session. Firstly your chosen clinical hypnotherapist will take some details from you regarding your health and lifestyle, this is essential information related not only to your treatment but also for insurance purposes.

Always make sure your chosen clinical hypnotherapist is well qualified and fully insured, not that anything is likely to happen to you but business insurance is essential for everyone’s peace of mind. The therapist, using their knowledge and experience, will outline the way they feel your treatment/sessions will proceed, you are free to agree or disagree to what they are suggesting, but remember you are talking to a highly trained and experienced person, who has probably come across many similar problems. But at the end of the day, this is a close relationship between you and your therapist, a totally confidential rapport, where you must work together.

Some therapists will combine this first meeting with your first session others will make another appointment for you, which gives you time to digest everything you have been told and decide if you feel the treatment been outlined to you is what you would like or even if you feel you could work with that particular therapist.

Clinical hypnotherapists have several ways of helping their clients to relax, each one is carefully chosen for the client’s personality and likes/dislikes. The client is usually encouraged to sit back in a comfortable chair with feet raised or in some cases lie down. There is absolutely nothing to worry about. During your session, you can hear every word the therapist says and you are free to end the session at any time. The therapist can only really communicate with the subconscious when the client is relaxed, so the more relaxed you are the better. It’s OK if you fall asleep because your subconscious mind is then totally listening to the therapist’s voice and taking in what is being said.

Basically, the therapist is correcting the confused readings of the subconscious. But don’t worry your therapist can’t ‘fiddle with your brain’ or make you do something against your will; remember all the time during your relaxation you can hear what your therapist is saying to you. If your therapist suggested something untoward your subconscious would immediately alert you and you would return to the now. This feeling of relaxation is like floating on a cloud, very peaceful and most enjoyable. After your session, you won’t be feeling sleepy and will be able to drive safely. Neither will you slip back into hypnosis.

Remember this is Hypnotherapy, a therapy, not a stage show that can make you feel or look a fool. It is a therapy that works for you, not against you.
