Throughout history when the human species was evolving, starvation was one of the biggest issues facing us. Because of this, an ability to seek out food as well as to be able to store it as efficiently as possible was a selective advantage, and people with these genetic abilities would have survived to pass on their DNA.
Fast-forward to the modern day and in our western society at least, there is an abundance of food. Food is quick and easy and more available no matter where you are, than ever before. At a deep level, a part of us may still believe that food could run out and that we should top up our fat stores in case it does.
It can often be much easier to gain weight than to lose weight, since the body wants to hold on to fat and save it for a rainy day (ie. A famine). Our modern diets, often rich is sugars and starches, cause us to produce insulin, which not only stores away glucose for later use, but it also stops fat from our fat cells from being burned as fuel.
Of course, food is pleasurable too. Our brains produce dopamine in response to sugar which makes us feel as though we need it and want eat it again and again. Starchy foods are often associated with comfort and security along with the release of the happy hormone, serotonin.
Of course, stress levels, emotional issues, habits and motivation all come into play too. So what's the answer?
