Change your life in 2018!
It’s that time of year again. You’ve indulged in plenty of food, wine and merriment over Christmas, and now you’re facing that “new year, new you” pressure most people tend to think about as 1st January rolls around.
If you’ve made New Year’s resolutions before, only to break them by 2nd January, you’re not alone! Resolving to change our lives, even in small ways, can make us feel immediately uplifted as we imagine ourselves finally slim, fit, smoke-free, or released from negative thoughts.
So why are many New Year’s resolutions doomed to such instant failure?
The simple reason is that your conscious mind is not equipped to make those changes you so desperately want. Your conscious mind works from your logical brain, which is where we make those resolutions. This part of the mind is driven by willpower alone.
It’s no wonder we break all those New Year promises, when it’s so easy to fall back into well-worn patterns of behaviour. We regain the weight, or we go out and buy a packet of cigarettes, often with that sinking sense of failure… why can’t we change our lives for the better?
In fact our choices, decisions, behaviours and habits are controlled by something else entirely – our subconscious mind.
It can help to think about your mind as an iceberg, with the part you can clearly see above water as your conscious mind, and the mass below your subconscious mind. Visualised in this way, it’s very clear to imagine how that iceberg is controlled!
Why your subconscious mind is your biggest saboteur
We are all a collection of memorised emotions and behaviours, which we gather over a lifetime but are mostly formed in childhood. If we want to make permanent changes in our lives, we must address our subconscious thoughts and beliefs first. Where exactly do they stem from? Are they even yours, or have they been copied from a parent?
You may not talk to yourself out loud, but you’re frequently having conversations with your subconscious mind. For example, you may decide to change career, so you plan your strategy feeling full of inspiration and positivity. You tell your conscious mind just how happy you’re going to be.
All is going well, until your subconscious mind pops up to remind you how much easier it is to stay where you are, or what happened in the past when you tried and failed. Before you know it, you’re stopped right in your tracks.
