Rates of depression are soaring.
The World Health Authority report ‘The Global Burden of Disease’ estimates that depression is set to be second only to heart disease as a cause of injury and disease world wide by the year 2020. Rates of depression have risen almost a thousand percent since 1945. It’s rising in all age groups but particularly in the young. People have tried to explain depression as a ‘chemical imbalance’ or a ‘genetic condition’, but there is little evidence for this.
What is causing depression?
Numerous studies show that depression is not primarily events-driven. It’s less about what happens to a person than about how they respond to what happens to them. All the latest scientific research shows that depressed people over-dream – they spend up to three times longer in the REM state than people who are not depressed.

- to recognise the negative fixed thinking styles that lock depression in place
- how to stay on a helpful track and not to get lost in the detail of a depressed persons problems

- brief therapy tips that help change a depressed persons unhelpful thought patterns

- deal with post-natal depression
- lessen the risk of suicide
- clarify what needs to be done to help a depressed person move towards a more positive future
- not get into persuading your client to feel better – subtle reframing that changes a depressed persons perspective
- use language to aid recovery
- depressed people wake up exhausted
- food effects mood – how to guide your client to food that makes them feel better
- some therapeutic approaches are harmful for people with depression
- it is important to check for evidence of PTSD
And be able to:
- use a CBT model to help your client challenge unhelpful thoughts when away from the therapy room
- work with your client to insure they stay free from depression in the future
- relax your client
- build positive expectation and motivation in your client
