Diploma in medical hypnotherapy
This course is for anyone looking to expand their working practice with clients with long term health conditions, who are perhaps in chronic pain, or who have complex phobias or other concerns that are getting in the way of them living the best life for them. You do not need to be working in a hospital, this course is for everyone who wants to know how to work effectively with clients with complex needs.
The aim of the course:
The aim of this course is to enable you to perfect your skills as clinical hypnotherapists with clients facing significant health challenges, for instance:
- Living with chronic, persistent pain.
- Helping clients with chronic, incurable illness.
- Specialist techniques for needle and other phobias.
- Using hypnotherapy in challenging circumstances.
- Supporting clients through their chemotherapy and other complex treatments.
How is the diploma taught?
The diploma is primarily taught via Zoom, an online provider similar to Skype. The diploma also has a residential weekend at the beginning where you learn specialist skills of trance and solution-focused techniques into your work with clients. We practice evidence led clinical hypnotherapy and look at some of the science and research behind our profession.
When does it begin?
The next run of the diploma commences on 2nd March 2019 will be held The Old Rectory Clinic, Iron Acton, South Gloucestershire (a list of local accommodation can be provided. The online courses will then be distributed through March to May with completion of the course possible on the 11th May. We may be able to offer a degree of flexibility in scheduling these online courses, with weekend and evening options.
What support do I get?
You will be supported throughout the diploma with full access to a closed Facebook discussion group, access to tutors and three topic-related Zoom supervision sessions. In total, there will be nine two-hour online courses, one two-day residential weekend (2nd and 3rd March) and one full-day workshop concluding the course on the 11th May (including award ceremony).
There are four group supervision sessions, this equates to approximately 40 contact hours.
What work do I have to do?
You will be required to complete short assignments and to engage in further reading, some of which will be supplied. You will be encouraged to bring readings you have found useful etc., to the online training sessions and supervision sessions and to share these in the discussion group. Peer learning will be a key part of the learning process and you will be studying alongside your cohort for the duration of the course.
It is likely that you will already have a hypnotherapy qualification such as HPD and or DSFH. However, we can also take psychologists and psychotherapists working with clients looking to improve the skills they can offer in a clinical environment.

Dr Rachel Gillibrand
Rachel is a chartered psychologist specialising in the application of psychology to your health and well-being, and registered as a practitioner psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council and is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society.
Registered with the Association for Solution-Focused Hypnotherapists and the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council, she has experience of working with a wide range of anxiety-related conditions, low mood, phobias and eating behaviours.
Dorothea (BA DHP HPD Hyp.Supervisor. Registered with CNHC and NCH) is a full time SF hypnotherapist and also a solution focused BRIEF therapist trained with the BRIEF organisation.
Dorothea is experienced in using solution focused hypnotherapy in clients with significant health challenges, both in hospital and the therapy room. She also has a private practice in Cyncoed, Cardiff.
Dorothea founded the Hospital Hypnotherapy Service in The University Hospital of Wales (UHW) in Cardiff, and now leads a team of clinical hypnotherapists in UHW.
About Caroline Huish
Caroline Huish is a full time clinical hypnotherapist. She is also an NCH accredited supervisor. Additionally, she is practice manager of The Old Rectory Clinic, which serves the community of South Gloucestershire and North Bristol. Caroline regularly runs CPD training courses and workshops for fellow professional practitioners.
