Recent figures have estimated that there are now approximately 2.8million individuals suffering from diabetes in the UK – a staggering increase of 50% in the past six years alone.
Whilst Laura wholeheartedly agrees that the situation must be addressed, she does not believe that an awareness campaign is the solution. After all, we all already know that gorging on junk food whilst lazing on the sofa is all but good for us – so how effective are constant reminders really likely to be?
Instead, Laura believes that what is required are real and plausible solutions to the problem, and here are her suggestions as a health practitioner:
- Diabetes is primarily caused by eating too much of the wrong thing, and overeating is largely an emotional response to other things occurring in a persons life. Laura believes that what sufferers’ need is support in dealing with the underlying issues that could be leading to emotional eating. Low self-esteem and low self-worth for instance, can lead a person to needing additional comfort, comfort that they believe they can get from food. Laura believes that instead of investing more money in drugs, instead funding should be spent on counselling, hypnotherapy and various other alternative and complementary therapies.
- Laura’s second suggestion is that cookery and nutrition classes be made mandatory in schools so that children learn from an early age that what you put in is equal to what you get out.
- Thirdly, Laura suggests researching the option of supporting the body through diet and supplementation. For example, Licorice Root is apparently a natural sweetener that can also support the pancreas and help the body to overcome sweet cravings.
What do you think about Laura’s suggestions? What do you believe can and should be down about the diabetes epidemic? We would love to hear your thoughts which you can leave in the comments box below.
