AFC Tickton Under-13s were struggling to stay ahead in the game, so decided to sign up hypnotherapist Shelia Granger in a bid to turn things around.
Shelia has since used the suggestive therapy to help the young lads believe they are capable of beating the teams they previously lost to, and the boys haven’t looked back since.
13-year-old striker Jack Sharp said: “After Sheila talked to us I felt much more confident on the pitch. And I scored more goals than I normally would.”
Whilst some of the team showed resistance and skepticism at first, actually Shelia’s ‘mind management’ sessions have been extremely beneficial.
Sessions include chanting positive mantras such as “I can be the best tackler” and “we can score the best goals”, as well as visualisation techniques.
“I told them to close their eyes and visualise playing their best as well as how they wanted the match to go. They almost go into a trance. The idea is to focus their attention and get rid of any distractions.
“I told the team to delete any thoughts of negatives in the past – such as bad tackles from previous games. If you keep focusing on the negatives it can be a distraction.” She said.
According to team manager Richard Towse, the performance of the lads improved dramatically almost immediately after the hypnotherapy sessions first began in December of last year.
He went onto say that both he and the team owe Shelia a huge thank you for all the work she has done.
