The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention undertook a vast study of hospital data over the years 1995 – 2008 for around 8 million patients, and the results were startling.
The number of people aged between 5 to 44 years suffering from strokes, increased by about a third in less than ten years. The factors which are said to have contributed to the strokes, included high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. Young people are more unhealthy than ever before, and the consequences of this are now becoming apparent.
The study also revealed that there was a 31% rise in ischemic strokes for those people who were aged between 5 and 14 years old. At the beginning of the study, there were 3.2 strokes per 10,000 hospital cases recorded, and by the end, this had risen to 4.2 strokes per 10,000. The research also concluded that men were more likely to suffer from strokes than women. Individuals aged between 35 and 44, and had suffered from an ischemic stroke, also had hypertension.
This data and research is obviously very worrying. It is clear that there is a lot of work required to raise awareness of this issue, and to encourage people to live more healthy lifestyles. If this is not tackled soon, the situation will only get worse.
