Catherine O’Neill, services manager for anxiety helpline charity Anxiety UK has said that the disorder is one of the issues for which they receive the most calls.
Many patients seek constant reassurance from GP’s and helplines such as Anxiety UK that there is nothing wrong with them, with the most common fears being HIV and cancer.
O’Neill explains that many callers have nursed someone close to them through a debilitating illness such as cancer and this results in them becoming preoccupied with the fear they might have it themselves.
