Ways to live a stress-free life

For most of us, stress is part of life - however, it doesn't have to take over. We may not have control over certain triggers, but there are things we can do to eliminate self-created stress triggers.

Take a look at the following suggestions to eliminate self-created stress:

Stop jumping to the worst-case scenarios

It can be easy to fall into a habit of always assuming the worst and this is often because of two things. Firstly, people like to 'know' what the worst-case scenario is so they aren't surprised when it happens - and secondly, if you know what the worst-case scenario is, you feel as if you have the power to stop it from happening. The thing to ask yourself is how this kind of thinking truly benefits you - does it make you feel good about yourself and your life? Instead, try to see the positives, you'll be amazed at how quickly this reduces stress.

Don't take on other people's problems

Listening to other people's problems and being empathetic is all part of being a good friend/family member. Having said this, there comes a point where listening turns into enabling - where you take responsibility for the other person. This does the other person no good and will only add to your stress. Try to empower others to take responsibility for themselves and motivate them to find their own solutions.

Live in the present

Worrying about the future or dwelling on the past can add to stress as there will be little you can do to change the situation. Instead, try to focus on the present - listen to your body and your emotions and respond accordingly. Meditation and physical exercise are great ways to focus on the present.

Surround yourself with people who make you happy

If negative people surround you, your thoughts are likely to reflect this. Surround yourself with positive people who make you feel revitalised and good about yourself instead. Laughing with friends is an easy way to dissipate stress too, so schedule in some time to socialise on a regular basis.

Don't take on more than you can handle

Being busy can become an addiction - rather than slowing down and dealing with our emotions, we prefer to busy ourselves with tasks at work and/or at home. Doing this for too long will leave you mentally and physically drained, not to mention susceptible to stress. Avoid taking on more than you can handle and take some time to slow down and figure out a pace of life that truly suits you.
