Profile
There has been a lot of hocus pocus written about hypnotherapy over the years, reinforced by entertainers, the media and regrettably, those who have little understanding of psychology or how the mind works.
If you are considering hypnotherapy, before you spend your hard earned cash, I think it’s important that you have a clearer understanding of how hypnosis actually works, away from all the tall claims, big promises and those who claim that it doesn’t “work” at all.
For straightforward issues such as exam nerves, simple phobias public speaking etc. we can use your imagination to experience those events differently without the strong negative emotions and thoughts you may have had previously. It involves guided visual imagery to “see” yourself in that situation, relaxed and in control. Please bear in mind that this imagery has to be realistic. Your unconscious mind may not be logical or rational in the conscious sense, but it’s not daft! Telling lies to yourself by suggesting that cigarettes taste like dog poo or that you have had surgery that you have not had (e.g. a gastric band), will not resolve your issues, no matter how much someone tries to convince you that it will. The effects (if any) will be short lived and will usually cease altogether once the treatment has ended.
For more deep routed issues such as anxiety and panic, pain management, low self esteem, weight or eating disorders I recommend mnemodynamic therapy.
Mnemodynamic therapy (ne–mo-dynamic) - literally “the moving of memories” is a powerful technique combining the most effective elements of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), neuro linguistic programming (NLP) and hypnoanalysis.
You may find that although an event is in the past, the emotional attachment is still in the present, so when you think of the event it still hurts as much as it did at the time – that’s why we try to file it away somewhere and “try to move on.”
Using this technique we allow the unconscious mind to work through past difficulties that may be causing your present problems. You can look at these difficulties then, with a fresh perspective. You may still think about and remember those difficult times, but you won’t feel the same. As a result, they won’t have the same influence over your life as they have had.
So to sum up, both of these techniques use the infinite store of resources in our unconscious mind to reframe, review and see events and situations differently.
