I find hypnotherapy as fast and effective way to treat problems such as anxiety, stress, coping with change, breaking bad habits and increasing self-confidence. I am also qualified in counselling, coaching and NLP so i have many different ways to help people with change and personal development. I keep abreast of current developments in psychology and constantly add to my skill set. I believe everyone is an indvidual with different needs so all my treatments are tailored specifically to you. Because of my previous experience in the corporate world I also work extensively with people facing interviews, assessment boards and career change.
Background and Experience
I have always been interested in how people tick. Originally I worked in recruitment, career management and leadership development but left my corporate career several years ago as I became more and more interested in how and why people change. I was a consultant working in change management and I began to realise that although the firm I worked for concentrated on changing systems, I was more interested in how people change and develop and so I began studying various change techniques and approaches, starting with NLP. From here I moved into coaching and leadership development, both of which I loved. Whilst having a lot of success with coaching I was also fascinated by the people who did not change. Those who knew what they wanted, knew what they had to do, but did not do it. This took me into the world of hypnosis and psychotherapy so that I could look work with people at a deeper level. As the corporate world does not generally welcome techniques like hypnosis (a mistake, it is great for stress, confidence and performance issues generally) I was inevitably led more towards working with private individuals.
I am continually reading, learning and researching in order to enhance my skills but as balance is important, I also spend time making and decorating cakes which I find a great activity for switching of the left brain and engaging the creative side of myself. They taste good too.
Training, qualifications & experience
I have a Masters Degree in Coaching (Oxford Brookes University), a post-graduate certificate in Positive Psychology (University of East London) and Diplomas in Hypnosis and Advanced Counselling and Psychotherapy (Chrysalis). I have a certificate in cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy.

Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy
CBH is a well researched and effective form of hypnotherapy combining hypnosis with techniques from cognitive behavioural therapy. This form of hypnosis engages the focused attention of the client and results in powerful change. The proactive cooperation of the client puts him or her in control and so they learn a valuable life skill whilst achieving a specific goal. CBH has been clinically tested and is very effective in treating anxiety, depression, lack of confidence and self esteem, as well physical conditions like IBS and pain.
Hypnosis and Weight Loss
There are a number of ways in which hypnosis can assist with weight loss so underneath I describe some of the different approaches. I work in different ways depending on the ciient's needs and personality. Although each approach is slightly different, they are all holistic and deal with habits, compulsions and addictions and motivation. Your relationship with food is key to success as is a realistic body image.
Hypnotic Gastric Bands
Much in the news right now, a hypnotic gastric band replicates “virtually” the process undertaken with gastric band surgery but without the attendant risks of anaesthetic and invasive surgery. They have the same success rate as surgical bands of around 70% and I believe that, by tackling the underlying practical and emotional issues surrounding food, the success rate can be increased. Weight problems are not created in isolation and you will have a mesh of habits, triggers and emotional and environmental issues that sustain the problem.
With a hypnotic gastric band, we tackle the problem holistically using psychological techniques from other disciplines such as NLP and cognitive behavioural therapy as well as hypnosis. Because you are an individual, your treatment will be tailored to your particular personality and circumstances.
Typically, the treatment will take place over 5 or 6 sessions during which you will learn how to relax and enter a deep hypnotic trance and you will also begin the mental process of preparing for a life changing event. The band is usually fitted at the fourth or fifth session depending on your progress. After fitting there will be a follow up to check that the weight loss is proceeding at an appropriate rate and adjustments can be made.
Having a band means a commitment to long-term healthy eating. Because you eat so much less you need to ensure that you eat a nutritionally adequate diet and you must be prepared to change your whole approach to eating.
Gastric bands are not recommended for people without a significant amount of weight to lose. If you have any health challenges, or take prescription medicines regularly, you would need permission from your doctor. They are not suitable for pregnant women.
Behavioural therapy techniques
For those who have less weight to lose, or who want a gentler approach, hypnosis can be combined with other psychological techniques. You can explore your particular triggers for over-eating and any emotional difficulties that contribute. You can learn how to overcome obstacles, (mental and physical) and become more accepting of your natural body shape. Specific food compulsions can be removed with NLP techniques.
This approach is particularly suitable for people who like plans, structure and specific goals for weight loss. A course of 6 sessions will get you started and on-going support and coaching can be offered by telephone or email if required.
This approach can be adapted to any diet so it is a good route for anyone struggling to follow guidelines or who would like some help with the psychological side of eating.
The Intuitive Eating Approach or Non Diet
This means giving up dieting forever and this can be a frightening prospect for people who have dieted all their lives. Whilst this can be a tougher road in the early stages, it does lead to a more relaxed approach to food by ending dieting and learning to eat like naturally thin people eat. The focus is on making peace with yourself, your body and your emotions. When you stop using food as a crutch, you will lose weight. The benefits of this approach include greater self- reliance and confidence and this will impact your life in many different ways.
This approach suits those who dislike being told what to do or following rules. It is ideal for people who are sick of yo-yo dieting or who struggle with body image issues. It is a course in personal development and you learn to trust yourself to know what is best for you.
