Profile
Being a therapeutic counsellor, hypnotherapist and personal development coach fascinates me. I get a real thrill from being involved in people experiencing such profound and amazing positive changes in their lives.
My interest in hypnotherapy was a natural progression within my role as a secondary school teacher, I worked closely with my students and their families, helping with social issues which impacted their everyday lives. As a result, I became interested in therapeutic counselling and the difference it can make to the quality of our lives. I then realised how powerful our minds are and how we have incredible healing powers in enabling us to turn our lives around for the better.
I have a special interest in working with the issues that cause stress and anxiety often leading to confidence and relationship concerns.
I often work within local schools where my teaching experiences enable me to give insight into the problems and issues that affect teaching staff. I also volunteer as a counsellor with DAA (Dorset Action on Abuse) working with adult survivors of childhood abuse.
The following is a sample of the Q & A page from our website:
What is Hypnotherapy and how does it work?
For those who have not considered hypnotherapy before, let us put your mind at rest. Hypnosis is a perfectly natural state, which many of us experience quite normally in our everyday lives and clients often liken it to daydreaming. An altered state of awareness where beneficial suggestions can be readily accepted into the subconscious mind to replace harmful or unwanted thought processes with more helpful and positive ones. A kind of mental key, if you like, to unlock the power of your subconscious mind, where past knowledge and memories are stored as well as a vast reservoir of potential for your future.
The 'therapy' part of the word speaks for itself, (from the Greek therapeia, meaning to heal or take care of). After an 'in depth' discussion to ascertain the exact nature of the problem, a personalised treatment plan will be written for each individual client, the natural hypnotic state is then induced by a qualified therapist in controlled conditions and with the skillful guidance of the therapist, the client is helped and encouraged to make the necessary changes within themselves to affect a cure.
Will I be made to do something embarrassing or against my will?
No, definitely not, the procedure will always be explained to you beforehand and during the treatment you will always be aware of what you are being asked to do. You are free to end the session at any time if you do not feel comfortable.
Will I be asleep?
While the depth of hypnotic trance will vary with each individual, and will also depend on the type of treatment, it is not the same as sleep. The outward signs can be quite similar, slow gentle breathing, rapid eye movement, even light snoring, but you will always remain aware and in control, able to bring yourself out of trance should you feel the need, or easily respond to the therapists suggestions to end the trance when the session is completed.

Comments &Testimonials
IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) Miss J.T. Bournemouth
"I have been suffering from IBS for several years and have been undergoing medical treatment from doctors and nutritioninsts, without a desired effect. I saw a pattern in my symptoms which made me aware that stress and anxiety was a major contributing cause of the IBS. I decided enough was enough and investigated other methods of treatment, which is what put me in contact with Joy at Swans Therapy. The treatment I recieved helped me to learn what my personal triggers were and how best to manage them, giving me back control over my symptoms. The relaxation techniques and hypnotherapy treatment I have received has enabled me to feel so much better and happier. I have also found out when and why my emotional reaction to eating began as a young girl, which helped me to understand myself more. Engaging in the counselling process with Joy has helped me to now get on with my life, for which I am very grateful"
Weight Loss & Confidence - W.J. Bournemouth
"Thank you for all your help in getting me to a point in my life where I can move forward with a confident, assertive outlook on everything and in control of my relationship with food."
Stop Smoking - D Bartlett, Parkstone, Poole.
" I had tried to give up smoking so many times, but always fell back into the same old habit after a while. I could feel that it was really starting to affect my health, getting out of breath very quickly and often coughing in the mornings. When John said that it would only take one session of hypnotherapy I was a bit doubtful, but the session was quite an intense experience and I came away feeling so positive and confident, quite clear in my own mind that I really was a 'non smoker'. The follow up session was also invaluable as it helped me to deal with the cravings and understand other after effects. I wish I had done it years ago, I could have saved a fortune!"
