I am the founder of The Good Therapy Works, here we offer a range of individual therapies and services - bespoke workshops and subject specific group presentations on a wide range of conditions (e.g. coping with anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, fertility, childbirth, phobias, irritable bowel syndrome and pain relief).
We offer three different services to individual clients depending upon need: including individual counselling, life and career coaching and Clinical Solution Focused Hypnotherapy
After many years working for large organisations driving forward major change programmes, government initiatives, developing and redeveloping systems and repeated organisational restructures and redundancy programmes, I came to realise that 'people', the very precious resource that makes our whole society tick were creaking under the incredible pace of change, stress and pressures placed on them. People were frequently not being heard or listened to, or they were simply being overwhelmed, struggling to cope with the myriad of pressures that life expects of us all.
Today there is a level of resilience that each and everyone of us needs in order to get through the many different and often emotional life events we have to face. In my workplace in the past I would frequently see colleagues suffering from stress and anxiety but thought little of it until that is, when I least expected it, after returning to the workplace following the birth of my first child I found myself paralysed by the debilitating symptoms of anxiety, unable to face the thought of returning to work - I was shocked, 'so it could happen to me too' I mused!
It was at this point I made my decision to retrain and become a clinical hypnotherapist. Having children gave me a new perspective and I am passionate about working to support and help others. I knew I had a well developed range of skills which gave me a great foundation from which to embark on my exciting new journey. Several years of intensive training and supervised practice followed where I gained as much knowledge and expertise as possible in a range of specialised areas in order to help others get their lives back on track.
The ever growing culture of target driven work related performance, ordinary and not so ordinary life changing events which often blow our worlds apart; bereavement, divorce, trauma, illness, violence, abuse, interviews, fear of public speaking to examination stresses and the ever-pressent social pressures our children face on a daily baisis all provide examples of how events can take real toll on us at different stages in our lives. This is borne out by the year on year rise we see in mental illness, much of which is exacerbated by stress related illness. The demands for the NHS Talking Therapies services are spiralling and some would say are at breaking point with more requests for its services than it can feasibly manage.
I became more interested in what was happening to people who previously had had professional careers or managed to successfully bring up families and or lead active and enriched lives who then become unable to function properly. Additionally through my own experiences of suffering from anxiety and of trying for a family for many years I was also acutely aware of the need to support, understand and listen to those individuals and couples in similar situations, those trying to have families, the pressures, disappointments, emotional and financial roller coasters that many couples go through, often in isolation feelings from such events can play out in physical symptoms and behaviours and clients can see significant benefits by positive reframing and solution focused therapy techniques.
My professional life had equipped me extremely well over the years with mentoring, coaching and leadership skills used to support and help work colleagues develop and further their careers but I knew little about power and benefits psychotherapy and hypnotherapy. After my second little boy was born and my twelve IVF attempt (yes you read that correctly) I actively refocused on where I wanted to take my life, a change in career that would see me proritising helping others get the very best out of their lives has been a positive life changing decision for me and many of my clients.
I now am proud to run a successful hypnotherapy practice where day on day I work with people who are also seeking positive change to their situations. I am constantly struck by the power of individuals who who overcome fear and challenge and strive to and succeed in getting their lives back.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a safe and enjoyable therapy which provides a clear explanation of how our brains work and how the body is then affected by a change in our thought processes, activities and interactions. It is from this point we can are able understand the effects of debilitating conditions like anxiety, depression and anger and their associated disorders. We use future solution creation, guided imagery, visualisation, trance / hypnosis in our sessions. I use elements world renowned NLP techniques (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) in my practice to support clients which safely and effectively support clients journey of change throughout the collaborative therapy process.
I offer clinical hypnotherapy and psychotherapy in a safe and confidential setting in the beautiful Somerset countryside, our comfortable therapy rooms overlook uninterrupted peaceful views of the Somerset Levels giving a relaxed and calm place for clients to work. Clients leave their hypnotherapy sessions feeling calm, relaxed confident and competent and equipped for the positive change in their lives.
Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process between therapist and client where we work together using the knowledge of how our brains' function, an understanding how this links to our body and the chemical reactions triggered by our brains, this understanding of the basic elements of neuroscience and what happens to us when we are in an anxious stage is key to each client's understanding of themselves, we use this knowledge, the clients desire to take control with a short couch session where the client is able to access their subconscious mind under hypnotic trance - a safe a pleasurable experience with consolidates the earlier psychotherapy work of the session - leaving the client to leave in a relaxed, calm and confident state in which to continue their day.
Anxiety can affect us in ways we may expect but also in less obvious ways, we may not realise that the way we think can impact on both psychologically and physiologically - as your therapist I work with you to explore these aspects of what is happening to us when gripped by anxiety, anger or depression - the primitive responses that can unwittingly dominate our lives, through trance sessions and future solutions therapy work we build an environment where positive changes, and confidence can thrive as each client's desire to change and take a positive step towards brings them to that person that they wish to be.
Specialisms inc. - generalised anxiety, depression, anger, phobias, sleep disorders, exam stress, sleep disorders, conception, fertility and childbirth.
Fertility & conception - I have considerable personal experience and know first hand how very difficult it is discussing and dealing with the challenges women (and men) face when embarking on fertility treatments. Coming to terms with the outcomes of these emotional and rollercoaster journeys can require sensitivity and expertise. Being able to stay focused and positive rather than getting hijacked by our emotions at such an important time is key for women and their well being.
Hypnobirthing - using relaxation and positive focus during childbirth
Many people turn to hypnosis when they are ready to make a positive change in their life, and when they recognise the importance of being in control of their futures, the first step is making the decision to change, and hypnotherapy is an invaluable asset to get you through what can be a challenging and demanding world out there with the stresses and strains our everyday lives put on us.
