Further information

What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness that allows the subconscious mind to make positive changes through direct suggestions and therapeutic metaphors. While this state is associated with relaxation, hypnosis is an escape from momentary overload, leading to relaxation.

What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a psychotherapeutic modality that uses hypnosis to achieve a desired outcome. In hypnosis, subjects may show greater receptivity (suggestibility) to suggestions, and hypnotherapy attempts to change the current feelings or behaviours that the subject wishes to change.

Who is a hypnotherapist?
A hypnotherapist uses hypnosis as a primary tool to assist clients in achieving their goals. A hypnotherapist often differs from other therapists by focusing on the role of unconscious behaviours and influences in the client's life.

Who is a hypnotist?
A hypnotist is skilled in the technique of hypnosis induction. Hypnotists very often use hypnosis for entertainment.

What is the difference between hypnotherapy and hypnosis?
The difference is that hypnosis is defined as a state of mind, whereas hypnotherapy is the name of the psychotherapeutic modality in which hypnosis is used.

If I'm hypnotised, do I give up control?
Hypnosis is a state of focused attention, similar to being absorbed in a book, movie or sport. You can come out of hypnosis at any time if you wish. Your hypnotherapist could be described as a guide who takes you on a journey; they are the facilitator, but only you can make any changes. Knowing that you are in control and can make changes can be empowering.

The more often you choose to go into hypnosis, the easier it is to relax into the process, knowing that you remain in control and can end the hypnosis session at any point if you wish. Because most people find hypnosis a profoundly relaxing and very pleasurable experience, they rarely choose to do it but know that they could if they choose to.

What are the feelings during hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural state of mind similar to daydreaming. People are often surprised that they can hear what is being said and move or speak if they want to. Everyone's experience is different, and how an individual feels may differ each time they enter hypnosis. Some people describe hearing every word the hypnotherapist says, while others find their mind wandering; many lose track of time during hypnosis. What you are or are not aware of during the process is unimportant and does not affect the effectiveness. Relaxation is unnecessary for hypnosis, but most people describe being very relaxed during and after the session.

What is Mindfulness-based cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy?
Mindfulness-based cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy is at the core of my practice. This innovative approach integrates the principles of mindfulness and cognitive-behavioural techniques with the transformative potential of hypnotherapy. It explores the intricate connections between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, fostering self-awareness, resilience, and a deep sense of empowerment.
