I really hope that you find the following information useful. It can be difficult to take the first step to getting some help when things are not going well in your life.
My name is Amanda Johns and I trained as a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist following a career in the care sector. This, and my general life experience, led to my interest in trying to help people who feel really stuck and want a better life for themselves.
Training, qualifications & experience
My approach uses a powerful combination of solution focused therapy, brain based therapy and hypnotherapy. These techniques are based on up-to-date research from neuroscience and incorporate other useful elements from neuro linguistic programming (NLP), cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and mindfulness.
- Solution Focused Therapy - clients explore their preferred future and they are supported in identifying small, positive steps that will move their lives forward. The past can't be changed so we don't focus on it. However, our thought processes can change. Every day is a new start, it is an opportunity to move forward in a positive way.
- Brain Based Therapy - explains to you some of the workings of the brain, such as how our mind creates symptoms and behaviours, and therefore what you can do to help it work for you rather than against you.
- Hypnotherapy - is used in the second part of the session to give you the chance to absorb and digest what has been discussed and to allow change to take place at a subconscious level. The hypnosis gives the brain time to find solutions, which are appropriate to your circumstances.
Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state. We all go in and out of trance several times a day, often without noticing - such as driving on a motorway without hitting anything and yet you can't remember the last few junctions or being so engrossed in a book or TV programme that you don't notice someone entering the room. Many people are surprised at how natural hypnosis feels, a bit like day dreaming. You will remain in complete control. You can't be hypnotised against your will and you won't reveal any secrets or do anything peculiar. You will be able to come out of the hypnosis whenever you wish, just like you do when a car pulls in front of you on the motorway or someone calls your name when your engrossed in that book.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is so much more than just Hypnotherapy. It is a collaborative process between you and the Solution Focused Hypnotherapist and a number of sessions are required.
Combining your commitment to the therapy process and my skills and knowledge in the field of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, the achievement of your goals and a brighter future becomes a real possibility!

*You should always seek medical advice if you suspect you have a serious medical condition.
You are not alone, so many people are struggling with this. Our modern society may be giving us more opportunities, better communication and more choice than ever before but hand in hand with all this is an epidemic of anxiety. For example, financial concerns, work worries, relationship difficulties, the relentlessness of our responsibilities, fears about the state of the world, and very little down time can lead to individuals feeling stressed and anxious. It can be hard to work out what the problem is and where to even start with sorting it all out. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is an extremely effective intervention that will allow you to make real and long lasting changes in your life.
To ensure long lasting change is it usual to need 2-3 months of weekly sessions. However everyone's situation is different and so each week we will assess the progress you are making towards becoming calmer, happier and having a more fulfilling life.
It can creep up on you slowly or appear as if out of nowhere. That heavy, miserable, desperate, what's the point feeling. Everything is such an effort, you forget what it is like to laugh and can't believe that you ever did. Even small decisions are beyond you. Your mind can race, your heart can pound and yet you can hardly put one foot in front of the other. Many people successfully mask their low mood and can go to work and appear to function but what is going on behind that closed door that is there mind is another matter.
You are not alone, although that's how it can feel. In fact, 350 million people in the world now suffer with depression (World Health Organisation 2012) and this number is rising every day.
We are all different and yet low mood can affect anyone. The descriptions above are the realities of some of the ways people feel when they have aspects of depression. This isn't just feeling a bit off today and tomorrow you wake up and you're fine again no this is a bigger, sadder and much lonelier place to be. It can be started by an event in your life which upsets you or it can appear over time. Whatever the cause things can get better.
Much like anxiety this treatment will normally need 2-3 months of weekly sessions but everyone is different and so we will assess each week how you are progressing towards that wonderful goal of feeling better, happier and more confident.
Becoming a Non-Smoker
Just imagine for a moment how good it would be to stop. Think of how much money you could save. Imagine what it would be like to get over a cold without it always going to your chest. Think of what it would be like to not be afraid of what all those chemicals may be doing inside your body. Imagine how pleased you would be with yourself if you could do this.
You know that smoking is bad for your health and your pocket. If you are happy smoking then this section is not for you but if you are someone who really wants to stop this habit then read on.
A meta-analysis undertaken by the University of Iowa, involving nearly 72,000 people, concluded that hypnotherapy was 3 times more effective than nicotine replacement therapy for quitting the smoking habit for good.*
During your sessions we will spend time discussing the pros and cons of you smoking and not smoking. Only 10% of this habit is down to the addictive nature of the nicotine and withdrawal from this chemical is very swift. Despite what people think the difficulty of stopping is not the physical addiction but the psychological habit. We will discover how this habit takes hold and what you can do to change it. We will then use hypnosis to help consolidate the changes.
To be the most effective it needs to be you who wants to do this rather than family or friends.
If you are ready to take this life changing step then contact me to set up your appointment.
*The University of Iowa carried out a meta-analysis, using the results of more than 600 studies, with a total of nearly 72,000 people. The results included 48 studies of hypnosis covering 6000 smokers, and were published in the Journal of Applied Psychology. They clearly showed that hypnosis was three times more effective than nicotine replacement therapy. (New Scientist Volume 136).
This treatment can sometimes be done in a one-off double session. However if you are experiencing anxiety or stress in your life or have other addictions we may need more sessions. Please contact me to discuss your individual situation.
Phobias and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
If you have a phobia or are struggling with PTSD then please call. There is a highly effective intervention, called 'Rewind', that can be used to de-traumatise you so your fears are no longer triggered in your daily life. Generally just a few sessions are needed. Despite its effectiveness it does not use exposure techniques but allows your brain to rewire itself while you are in a calm relaxed state. You will not need to tell me all about what has happened - so much so that it is effective even if you are too upset to tell me anything about what has happened. So whatever your fear or trauma please get in touch.
Weight Loss Hypnotherapy
'If hunger is not the problem, then eating is not the solution.' Unknown
Does this resonate with you? People are getting bigger, you are not alone, but you are the only one that has to live with the reality of the discomfort and unhappiness that can be created by being too heavy. It can make you feel horrible as the real you is literally being smothered. You can’t move as you want to. You feel uncomfortable. You don’t look the way you want to.
Because so many people are struggling with their weight there must be something going on. We know that being too heavy is bad for us. Many of the diseases of the Western world are as a direct result of what we are eating and how much we are eating. We all know what we should be doing, eating less and more healthily, exercising more. But we don’t seem to be able to help ourselves. Why?
That is what we will explore and explain with weight loss hypnotherapy. We will:
• Work to reduce stress levels so that your body does not hold onto fat because, in evolutionary terms, the body evolved to store energy in times of stress.
• Help change your mindset so that you want to develop a healthier life style.
• Change and control habits involved in eating too much.
• Support you as we make changes that will become long-term healthy habits.
Like anxiety and low mood, weight issues can be complex and so usually need a series of sessions over a few months. Please contact me to discuss your situation.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can be useful in many different situations. As said previously it uses a combination of:
- solution focused therapy/psychotherapy
- using our improving understanding of how the brain works
- hypnosis to bring about lasting positive change.
If you want to know if it can help you please get in touch.
