Why Weight Loss can be a Huge Problem for Some People: Three Stages for Weight Loss with Hypnosis

Many of the individuals who seek hypnotherapy are women and men who may have successfully lost weight for several months, but have put it all back again within a short space of time. They are normal people who have had weight issues since childhood, or perhaps binging problems, and have been visiting weight loss programs and exercises, diets programs for years...but the problem keeps coming back somehow, sneaking back in their eating habits, procrastinating habits or other weight gain habits. These individuals may asking the question: "what can Hypnosis do that can help with long-lasting weight loss? Why don't I lose weight once for all?"
The problem is not "losing" weight, but rather "gaining" self-love. Most people with weight issues have a low self image; they may be successful, rich and hardworking intellectually, but emotionally they avoid looking at themselves. They do not believe people will love them for long, or they behave as if they do not care but deep down have fantasies of one day being loved and loving themselves.
When someone is focusing on losing weight it is worth looking at the belief that has kept the weight in place for so long. Often we hold beliefs at two levels; at the conscious level we think good thoughts about ourselves, our worth and what we deserve as human beings; but unconsciously our habits give away to our emotional beliefs about ourselves.
For example, we observe a woman working hard because she says she believes she is good at what she does; but when you observe the same person at home, without work or in social situations where she is stripped away from that professional identity, she is fidgety, restless and bored...often a sign that deep down she is not comfortable with who she is but only comfortable with what she does. She hides behind the identity of the professional, but as a person she does not believe she is good enough or interesting enough to sit with for a long time and she definitely finds the undivided focus on her own self uncomfortable.
In the same way, someone with weight issues could be believing on a conscious level that she is working hard at it and deserving a good figure, and love, and all the pleasures that come with the coveted picture of oneself as size 10-12...but subconsciously she may have a need to hide away from people or love because there is a belief that she is too ugly, too stupid or too weak for loving attention; that fear, that threat of being found out as boring, ugly and being hurt keeps the subconscious actively awake and creates cravings that are then fixed with addictive behaviours e.g. food, drink, work, money, sex etc. This may appear irrational on the surface, but is very valid for the unconscious trying to protect that person.
Now, you may ask: "what is this subconscious mind?". That is the part of the brain that controls the muscular systems, the emotions and our reflexive actions, which is why people with food issues find their arms and legs keep taking them to the chocolate aisle despite themselves; which is why the weight-issue person keeps eating despite logically knowing he has had a big meal just an hour ago.
The subconscious reasons, motivations, and drives need to be looked into and Hypnosis is an optimum way to do this; because Hypnotic state simply is a state where the brain waves have slowed down, the thought level has slowed down so much that the creative, emotional and reflexive brain can be worked with better and for longer periods. You access that hypnotic state several times in a day e.g. when driving, when listening to music or walking in a park; you can feel how the focus is nowhere, and yet there is an internal alertness and new ideas come in, resolutions and motivations come to life and problems are solved within seconds while in that state.
In the hypnotic state, the subconscious is accessed more quickly and there begin the three levels of work:
- level one: calming the internal cravings, fears and drives for protection and replacing with hope and confidence that food is just a physical thing, and that the needs behind the food intake or lack of exercise are valid and finding other ways of satisfying them.
- Level two: Finding the belief systems behind the symptoms of being overweight, binging, overeating, etc. and changing them into healthier beliefs about self and one's worth as a person; one's self respect and self -love is developed to reduce and eliminate the self-disgust that perpetuates the cycle of putting on weight and hating it.
- Level three: changing the internal images of self to the ideal size, ideal life style and ideal healthy state in the future, but in the subconscious mind in the present.
The subconscious has got no concept of time, date or decade; all it responds to are internal compasses, internal maps that it got from your past which is a bit like a movie script. Once the subconscious had accepted the role of "ugly" for you, no matter how much you self-affirm "I am beautiful", the subconscious will not have accepted that.
When we want to make long term changes we have to change the script internally and input a different role for that person in her/his script of life; very similar to deciding to learn a new language, and, just like learning a new language, is cumbersome to start with but soon becomes second nature or "unconscious". In the same way at level three, we practise rehearsing a new image, self, in relationships, in clothes, in life - so that the subconscious starts believing that new image.
But obviously all the above can be done under Hypnosis, and clients may practise in between sessions; by the time they finish their hypnotherapy sessions they should be losing weight, they are settled in their new exercise habits as well as new ways of thinking and feeling about food and their own selves; and they know it will last because when you get the driving licence after passing your exams, even if you do not drive it will be at least six months before you forget the driver inside, and if you start driving then you never lose the driver internally. In the same way, by the time clients with weight issues complete their hypnotherapy sessions, their subconscious is trained and all it needs now is driving with the new role until it becomes an unconscious habit to just be a healthy size, to believe in one's self worth.
