Why treatment setback can often be beneficial
Ok, so you have had some therapy sessions and felt better, started feeling more positive about yourself and your life, and realised you have got skills and abilities that can help you cope with stress. Then one day you feel like the treatment never worked! You feel worse, wondering if not even worse than before you started seeing a therapist! You feel almost cheated as if all that work had never happened and on top of that, you feel the lowest for a long time because somehow it feels like it will never work.
What if I said to you: it is normal, and it can be beneficial too? You are just having a setback, and it is a part of the journey, a part of going forward. I know it may feel like complete nonsense, but it is not! There are at least three reasons why in hypnotherapy this can be a positive step on your journey:
- It refocuses you back to your goals, and where you want to be.
When something bad happens, it can startle you as you probably weren’t expecting it. But this is a positive as you can stop and reflect on what had happened. This re-focus can be extremely beneficial as you can realise what could have triggered you to feel worse again, and what you need to do to get back on track.
- It gives you the awareness that you had felt better.
We are often too busy running around like headless chickens to notice positive changes as a result of therapy. Stopping to realise that we had had some better times can often give us more motivation to think about how else we can help ourselves.
- It makes you appreciate when you get back on track and feel better again.
When you have been in a bad place for a while, whatever that may be, anxiety, depression, being overstressed etc., your mind is used to one way of thinking, and to being stuck in negative thinking patterns. When you have a setback and then get yourself back on track again, you can really notice how good it feels to be in a better place. People often start writing down the good things in their lives, some call it ‘the reasons to be happy’. That’s a powerful way to train your mind to become positive and really take note of how it feels to be happier.
For your mind to make changes it has to go through a process, and some steps of that process can be backwards, but that does not mean that those steps are wasted. It just means you are going through another step on your way to becoming happier. With the help of a good therapist, this journey can get you ahead despite setbacks.
