The Qualities of a Hypnotic Experience
26th June, 2012
Clinical Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis for therapeutic change, but what are the qualities of a hypnotic experience?
The two key characteristics are focus and absorption.
There is a great saying that illustrates the importance of focus in everyday experience, which is; "what we focus on expands". Many people are focused on feelings and thoughts in life that cause them discomfort or pain, and they seem to get more and more of that in their lives and experience. Hypnotherapy can assist you in redirecting that focus onto more comfortable thoughts and feelings as well as new ideas, possibilities and perspectives to create therapeutic change. The quality and direction of our focus in life can truly define us and our experiences.
The other quality of a hypnotic experience is absorption – being totally engaged and interested in an experience. Hypnotherapy is often described as "experiential learning" as, not only are you exposed to new ideas and possibilities, but in hypnosis you actually have an internal experience of those ideas and possibilities which makes integrating them into real life easier. The absorption element of this is fundamental as you become completely engaged in the changes. We get absorbed in many experiences in life like watching a good movie or reading a good book, a sport or gardening etc. and this capacity we have as human beings is a key element to the success of Hypnotherapy.
