Hypnotherapy For Infertility Treatments
Recent advances in fertility treatment encouraged doctors to discount stress as a factor in infertility, but now they are again looking to the idea that stress may actually play a role in up to 30% of all infertility cases. The exact link between fertility and stress is not clear, but it is thought hormones play a key role. A study in Atlanta, Georgia followed the progress of 16 women in their twenties and thirties who had not had a period for six months. High levels of the hormone cortisol were found which is linked to stress. Eight of the women were given CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and after twenty weeks, six had started ovulating again and two months later two of the women became pregnant.
In the journal Human Reproduction an article describes how doctors compared pregnancy rates in couples that reported stress with those who did not. They discovered that pregnancy was much more likely to occur when couples reported feeling good, relaxed and happy, and was less likely if they reported feeling tense or anxious.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy based Clinical Hypnotherapy together with visualisation and imagery techniques can also help to prepare you for IVF or other fertility treatment. Firstly we assess in depth during an interview together with the client(s) the current state of emotional, mental and physical wellbeing.
Then there are four main ways in which clinical hypnotherapy to help clients.
You can be taught how to achieve a deep state of relaxation using hypnosis which will help to significantly reduce levels of stress.
|Secondly, hypnosis can be used to ensure that you have access to the skills and inner resources needed to cope better and handle an unsuccessful outcome more easily.
|Thirdly, hypnosis can be used to help you to prepare mentally, emotionally and physically for IVF. This preparation can range from positive lifestyle changes, changing limiting beliefs to eliminating a needle phobia.
|And lastly, hypnosis can help to increase the chances of a successful outcome.
According to a study presented to the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology Conference in Berlin in July of 2004:
hypnosis can effectively double the success of IVF treatments.
Clinical Hypnotherapy represents a safe and powerful way of increasing fertility either as a sole therapy in cases of unexplained fertility or in combination with fertility treatments such as IVF, IUI and fertility medications.
