Forgive and forget - seeing red - how hypnosis can help manage anger issues
Suffering from anger
People generally undergo an array of emotions throughout the course of each day, and for most people they will be able to control their feelings and keep things at bay. However, there are quite a few people that fight to control their temper and this affects not only them but their close friends, workmates and relatives. It can lead to fear and loss of closeness in relationships and bad feelings between friends and colleagues.
Other problems such as stress, anxiety or even depression can also be linked with anger management problems, but all of these issues can be helped with hypnosis and NLP.
Physical effects of anger
Anger can be shown in a number of forms, from social discomfort and general aggravation to violent outbursts over minor situations, such as 'road rage'. Long term, unresolved anger can create a downward spiral bringing about mental health problems including depression symptoms, as well as health concerns such as elevated blood pressure.
Anger can trigger quite a few of the physical responses such as:
- raising heartbeat
- higher blood pressure levels
- increased adrenalin levels
- inability to think ‘straight’.
What triggers an anger reaction?
Anger issues can have a wide variety of causes and each person will have individual reasons for their rage. Previous experiences of hurt, bereavement or despair, or difficult environments can bring about the onset of anger difficulties. All of these anger triggers can be readily helped using hypnotherapeutic strategies. Underlying beliefs about how things ‘should be’ or what people ‘should do’ if unmet or unrecognised can lead to anger outbursts.
How does hypnotherapy help?
A hypnotherapist will first help to establish the underlying issues that may be the source of the temper problems. Such as assumptions and beliefs that we have about how things or people should or should not behave. Then they will work both at a conscious and unconscious level with the client in order to help change those unhelpful thought processes. This may include helping the client to feel calmer and more relaxed, consider forgiveness and non-judgement of the person whom they think has wronged them. Recent research* shows that forgiveness can mean we allow old issues go more easily and forget about them.
By helping the client to change their reaction to the old trigger scenarios, they are less inclined to be consumed by the old feelings of wrath. So the individual feels calmer and much more relaxed than they would have previously. And just as removing fuel from a fire stops it spreading, simply by helping the person take care of the underlying reasons for their anger can lead to a dramatic improvement in their mood and their life in general.
Anne Morrison, clinical hypnotherapist, explained: “When someone is angry they often blame other people’s actions but as mentioned earlier, what is actually triggering their anger is that some deep seated belief or ‘rule’ about life has been broken. It’s this that leads to anger. We work to help them change that thinking and help them to understand how to manage their thoughts and actions in a different, more helpful way.”
