In the long run diets don’t work, we can go on a diet for a period of time and lose weight however as soon as we go back to our old eating habits we end up regaining the weight we have lost. The reason diets do not work is that they fail to address the underlying reasons behind your eating habits therefore more often than not – no long term changes are made.
Diets don’t just fail to uncover root causes to our eating habits they can leave us feeling deprived as they dictate to us what we can and cannot eat. We forbid ourselves of certain foods which can actually cause cravings for these foods to increase and result in binge eating. Research shows that “In humans, strict dietary restraint and/or abstinence from eating forbidden, highly palatable foods have been shown to contribute to binge eating (Herman & Polivy, 1990; Polivy, 1996; Polivy & Herman, 1985;Polivy, et al., 1994).
