If we are to believe what we read in the press Lily Allen broke down in tears during a gig because her back pain was so severe, Bono had surgery in a bid to fix his and former Prime Minister Gordon Brown decided to try Pilates to keep his strong.

The celebs are not the only ones though, a whopping 2.5 million Brits are also thought to suffer from back troubles with 80 per cent of us being affected at some point.

Though the chances are we will almost certainly battle with back pain during our lives even if only for a short time, there are certain precautions we can take to ensure we minimise the pain, length of time and damage.

The first thing to remember is not to panic as back pain is likely to ease with time. However for half of those who do experience an episode, back pain is likely to reoccur within the next two years.

Though in the past many individuals have been advised to rest their backs in order for the pain to subside, this is not the best advice for everyone. Our backs were actually designed to help us move and don’t fair well in situations where we sit dormant at a desk for hours each day.

The initial theory was that resting the weight bearing spinal column allowed inflammation to settle resulting in the pain going away. However, though it is good to rest for a day or two at the start of an episode of back pain, too mush rest can result in stiffness, muscle wastage, bone weakness and depression.

A good tip is to make a note of the activities you do and when you experience pain, as this will give you some indication of what may be causing it so you can avoid it in the future.

If your back pain has become so severe that it is beginning to affect your quality of life and your ability to carry out every day tasks then visit your GP who will be able to provide you with the appropriate support and advice and may refer you to a pain management specialist. You may also find hypnotherapy a very useful tool at this stage and if you would like to find out about how hypnosis may be able to help please visit our pain management fact sheet.

Netdoctor has a very useful section of their website which features a number of Q&A’s. One featured question that was particularly of interest to us was ‘Will hypnosis help my panic attacks?’.

The patient in question had been told they were suffering from panic attacks or an anxiety state. These attacks were usually characterised by what the patients describes as ‘moments of terror and feelings that she might die’. Having visited a psychologist, doctor and having been to A&E twice for hyperventilation they have taken matters into their own hands by reading books on anxiety and practising breathing techniques all to no avail.

The patient asked netdoctors expert’s if there were any treatments, such as hypnosis which would help her overcome her extreme anxiety.

The response from the experts advised that whatever treatment the patient decided to proceed with, they should make sure they are still seeing their doctor and or psychologist alongside. It is important to have a healthcare professional who can supervise your care and give you advice.

In terms of how hypnotherapy could the experts first expressed that there is no magic cure for panic attacks, but hypnosis is certainly very good for bringing down peoples stress levels.
Hypnotherapy treatment would usually involve seeking out the root cause of the anxiety before changing the individuals perception of past events.

If you are suffering with anxiety and panic attacks and feel that the techniques mentioned might help you then you can contact a qualified hypnotherapist in your local area using the homepage of this site.

With the UK having one of the highest self-harm rates in Europe questions are being raised about the quality of health care available to them.

In a self-harm report conducted by the Royal College of Psychiatrists over half of the 1,500 members surveyed felt they or their team did not have sufficient training to assess people who had harmed themselves.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists have criticised the NHS for the lack of training on self-harm and have made a series of recommendations to improve the standard of care given to people at risk of suicide and self-harm. The key point raised was that more funding, research and training are needed as all elements are essential to a good support system for those who self-harm.

Whilst there has been a reduction in the number of suicides in recent decades, the number of people self-harming in the UK is still continuing to rise with figures currently standing at four in every 1,000 people self-harming.

Though we tend to associated self-harm with adolescence and young adulthood it can occur at any age, even in the elderly population. The motivations vary but often it is used as a coping mechanism which provides a temporary relief from trauma such as emotional or sexual abuse or as an escape from distressing feelings such as depression, failure, self loathing and anxiety.

There are numerous methods which can be used to treat self-harm, some of which employ the use of antidepressants and others which look to treat the underlying causes and the behaviour itself.

One possible treatment option worth considering is Hypnotherapy. Whatever hypnotherapy is dealing with the key aims remain the same, one of which is accessing the subconscious to find the source of the problem. In the case of self-harm this may be anxiety or perhaps the memory of a trauma and whatever the route cause of the issue hypnosis will work at eliminating this.

Panic attacks are increasingly common in today’s society. They can be brought on by a number of factors, ranging from anxiety to the stresses of everyday life. Those going through the menopause will also be familiar with the unpleasant unexpected attacks.

There is a number of different treatments available to try and reduce panic attacks. Psychotherapy and medication are among the traditional forms, although medication can produce side effects almost as bad as the attacks themselves and have little benefit as they only work for a small amount of people who take them. Counselling is another form of treatment, although there are no negative side effects it can take months to achieve results.

Hypnotherapy on the other hand, is a quick way of reducing attacks and could even eliminate them on a permanent basis.

Regression therapy is one of the most common forms and involves the hypnotherapist taking you back to previous memories which could be the route of the attacks. Once you are hypnotised your therapist will have you regress to past events that could be contributing to your anxiety. This process will assist you in letting go of emotional attachments once you’ve revisited them.

This will leave you free to enjoy your life, hopefully minus the stress. Your hypnotherapist will also teach you how to deal with stressful situations on your own in order to keep those panic attacks at bay!

A recent article featured in online lifestyle magazine in2town looks into how Hypnotherapy can aid those who suffer from panic attacks.

There are several ways in which hypnotherapy can work its magic when it comes to panic attacks and it has already been proved to be helpful in several cases with the individuals being extremely happy with the results.

Panic attacks can often be uncomfortable, strange and frightening and they could even prevent you from going about your normal daily life activities.

As one of the most successful forms of treatment, hypnotherapy works by helping the person to cope with panic attacks in an efficient manner. The treatment is quick and does not make a negative impact on the patient because it helps them to relax in a positive but quick pace.

It gives the sufferer a new way to think as well as behave and this is achieved through breathing exercises and visualisations included in the technique in order to make the sufferer fearless.

The most recent accepted technique of hypnotherapy to be developed is currently known as hypo-analysis or Analytical Hypnotherapy. This therapy is an intensive talk therapy that helps the patient to be in a safe and secure environment and subsequently makes the patient travel through the process of identifying as well as underlying cause of patient’s phobia, anxiety or panic attacks. The process is carried out via using hypnosis.

Many studies reported success when using hypnotherapy as a cure for panic attacks and a lot of studies even suggested effectiveness in helping the patients get rid of panic attacks entirely.
