Bruxism is the medical term for teeth grinding and clenching the jaw. While most people will grind their teeth on some occasion, without any complications, persistent teeth grinding can result in dental damage, headaches and earache.
Stress and anxiety are often linked to teeth grinding, but hypnotherapy can help.
What typically causes teeth-grinding is unclear, but common causes include stress and anxiety, sleep apnoea and lifestyle factors (such as excessive alcohol drinking, too much caffeine, smoking and recreational drugs).
The effects of bruxism will vary for each individual, depending on the severity of the problem. Short-term effects include earache, headache, sleep problems, inflamed or receding gums and facial myalgia (aching facial muscles and jaw). Long-term effects can include dental damage and breakage and temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ).
