Facial blushing is a natural and normal human response, although those who experience chronic blushing can often find that it begins to cause anxiety. These feelings of anxiety frustratingly will only fuel and worsen the habit which in turn will only heighten the anxiety and so a vicious circle begins.

If you suffer from frequent, very obvious blushing and it is causing you distress then hypnotherapy is a viable option worth considering which will help to remove you from the vicious circle of behaviour. Many people often find their blushing is situational, for instance it occurs most often in front of certain people or in certain situations such as giving a work presentation.

The process of hypnotherapy helps to increase individuals confidence, improve self-esteem, reduce feelings of isolation, access underlying causes, reduce sensitive triggers, reduce fear of blushing and will ultimately help the individual to gain control over their subconscious blushing.

For those who suffer from severe blushing there could be a new treatment on the horizon – surgery.

According to an article on the Guardian website today, and operation called an endoscopic transthoracic sympathectomy, which cuts or clamp the nerves that stimulates sweating and blushing could alleviate blushing permanently.

Whilst many consider blushing to be a psychological problem, physically cutting the nerve will stop the skin turning red, and the operation is a simply procedure which only takes around 20 minutes.

However there are side effects. As the nerve has been cut to the face, the face is no longer able to sweat, meaning that other parts of the body may sweat more.

Enrique Jadresic who has had the procedure said: “Satisfaction rates among his patients is high but they undergo psychiatric screening before being operated on, and if the procedure becomes more widely available people may be tempted to have surgery before trying other ways of reducing their anxiety. Other treatments should be used first – psychotherapy, drugs or both. Surgery should be a last resort.”
