Recently a group of medical researchers conducted a small case study which examined the use of self hypnosis to control tics in Tourette’s patients.

The study, which was later published in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, involved a group of thirty-three Tourette’s patients between the ages of six and 19.

The participants viewed a video featuring a boy of their age outlining self-hypnosis techniques which they were to practice and learn alongside a set of relaxation techniques at least three times a day. Alongside this researches also ran hypnotherapy sessions for a period of two and a half months and they also asked that participants focussed on the feeling occurring prior to a tic as well as getting rid of the tic.

After the trial period was over twelve subjects had experienced a dramatic improvement after only two sessions and the video training. Thirteen experienced the same results but after three sessions, and one participant after four sessions.

Study leader Dr. Lazarus believes the study highlights how self-hypnosis presents many benefits over traditional drug therapy, including no side effects and reduced cost.

Excessive sweating is a rather embarrassing affair and unfortunately is not a problem solved simply by changing your antiperspirant.

If this problem has resulted in low self confidence and anxiety then it may be time to get serious about tackling it. It is a relatively rare issue but there are ways of reducing it.

Many people suffering from excessive sweating have reported positive results from botox, it may seem a little unconventional to have this in your arm pits but it does work a dream for paralysing sweat glands.

Other treatments include products with a high Aluminium Chloride content. Though this compound already appears in most deodorants already unfortunately the amount is minute. Visit your GP and they may be able to prescribe you product with a higher content.

Both viable and relatively effective solutions but botox is a little pricy and tracking down aluminium chloride is a challenge. However, another option worth serious consideration is hypnotherapy.

Although excessive is a physical issue it is actually very much fuelled by your mind. Anxiety and embarrassment of the problem only further it and make it worse.

Hypnotherapy aims to delve into the depths of your mind to find the route of the anxiety before erasing it. Those negative fears which fuel the sweating will be replaced by positive thoughts and suggestions.

A huge number of women enter the menopause each year with many of them experiencing a number of unpleasant side effects.

Side effects such as hot flashes are caused by the fluctuating levels of hormones circulating the body, something which is popularly controlled by hormone replacement therapy. However, recent studies have found that women taking hormone replacement therapy have an increased risk of breast cancer.

Herbal replacements are becoming increasingly popular and are being used with varying success. However if you are experiencing serious side effects then you might want to consider exploring other areas such as yoga, mindfulness training and hypnotherapy.

Hypnotherapy can be highly effective for treating symptoms of the menopause such as trouble sleeping, anxiety and hot flashes and it also often comes with welcome side effects such as a heightened levels of attention and responsiveness.

According to statistics around one in three of us struggle with anxiety over our financial debts. Additionally almost one in three of us choose to hide this fact from our loved ones.

Hidden debt can eventually lead to serious emotional and physical issues and the inability to share this with family and friends will often lead to stress, insomnia and other symptoms of anxiety.

Average personal debt in the U.K currently stands at £9,731.51 which excludes mortgages, though most of us only own up to half of this if discussing with a partner or family member.

One in five try to keep their debt from their partner and 78% have never confessed the true extent of their debt to a loved one.

Alternative therapies such as hypnotherapy or other types of treatment could be a life line for those struggling with serious debt. It deals with the route of the problem and works at eliminating negative thoughts and symptoms and replaces them with positive thoughts instead.

Yoga has experienced an upsurge in popularity over the past few years due to a heightened awareness that we need to look after ourselves and our body’s both physically and mentally.

Hyp-Yoga is the latest therapy craze to hit America, the aptly named therapy combines the power of hypnosis with regular yoga techniques.

Carol Yeh- Garner is the lady we have to thank for this innovative idea and she explains how it only seemed like a natural progression as during Yoga it is normal to already be in a light hypnotic state.

She added “For hypnosis in yoga, we bring that light state and (encourage) a deeper focus on ridding (the body and mind) of negative thoughts and negative energy.”

Most of her sessions are aimed at weight loss but are also beneficial for anyone wishing to cultivate a healthy lifestyle and balance of the mind.

A typical Hyp-Yoga routine involves repeating positive mantras about yourself as well as undertaking visualisation exercises during which participants picture their weight melting away whilst they are stretching and breathing.

Yeh-Garner stresses the importance of classes like these which help people to realise the importance of maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle. A good workout also has the welcome side effect of boosting our happy hormones.

Dermatitis can affect a person at any age, from infants to adults. Symptoms can include red, itchy, flaky and irritable skin.

Much like eczema scratching will worsen the symptoms and can often leave embarrassing marks on the skin. Treatment will usually involve ointments and moisturiser’s but a new study has now shown that it is possible to mentally treat the disease.

Researchers at the Barnsley District General Hospital in the United Kingdom have undertaken a study which shows the affects of hypnotherapy on patients with dermatitis. 18 adults and 20 children all suffering from severe dermatitis participated in the study and started to show improvements even from the very early stages.

Over the next 18 months the improvements remained constant throughout all clinical testing appointments. Out of the children, 10 experience immediate relief from side effects such as itching and scratching, 9 had improved sleeping patterns and 7 showed improvements in their general moods.

Having a skin condition doesn’t just affect you physically but also emotionally. As a child, growing up with skin that is different to everyone else’s can often leave emotional scars from taunting or bullying. If alternative treatments such as hypnotherapy can relieve even a small amount of suffering then they should be utilised.

Duodenal ulcers can make life very uncomfortable indeed. Symptoms include heartburn, burning in the throat and abdominal pain. Treatment using a course of specific drugs is usually very effective, however studies have shown that a high percentage (60 – 90%) of those who suffer from duodenal ulcers, relapse within one year of treatment.

UK medical journal, The Lancent, published a study looking into whether hypnotherapy could help to prevent relapses in the ulcers. The study consisted of 30 people, 14 female and 16 males, all who had suffered from duodenal ulcers and all who had experienced a relapse within the past six months.

All participants were asked to take a common and successful drug for treating ulcers (rantidine) and were given sufficient time for the drug to work and for the ulcer to heal. After this the group was then split into two. One group received seven hypnosis session and were given a recording to listen to on their own, the others did not receive any sort of hypnosis treatment. The participants were then given follow up reviews (with hypnotherapy sessions for the hypnosis group) every three months for the next year.

The aim of the hypnotherapy was to make the patient feel relaxed so they could focus their attention on their abdomen. They were instructed to imagine a feeling of warmth over their abdomen and the warmth was to control the secretion of stomach acid. They were asked to visualise this process.

One year on and the relapse rate of the hypnosis group was 53% compared to 100% in the group who didn’t receive any hypnotherapy. To conclude, the study showed that hypnosis can be of great help to those who have frequent duodenal ulcers.

Recent studies have found that the most effective method of treating chronic pain could be a case of retraining the brain with cognitive behavioural therapy.

A professor from Oxford has scientific findings which may suggest we are wrongly treating patients who suffer from chronic pain.

Professor Irene Tracey believes part of the problem is due to people perceiving pain as a symptom, when actually it is a disease itself. Tracey is just one of a growing number of specialists using hi-tech image scanners to reveal how medicine often approaches pain from the wrong perspective.

Chronic pain affects almost eight millions brits, that’s more than one in ten of the entire population. It is defined as an issue which persists for longer than six months after surgery or injury and is an issue which costs the economy £12 billion a year.

Professor Tracey explains how our beliefs can be powerful and over riding. She gave the example of an experiment she conducted where they told patients they has stopped giving them a strong opioid drug, when in fact they were still giving it to the patients. However suddenly they all reported their pain levels increasing.

The long term effect of these types of negative beliefs can have a catastrophic effect, as the more anxious and depressed someone becomes about pain, the more they rewire their brains architecture so that it ultimately becomes hypersensitive to physical stimulus. “In chronic pain, the area of your brain that processes your anxieties, fears and worries really plays havoc,”

People are now beginning to adopt different approaches in response to chronic pain. Training and coaching courses, some of which take on an approach similar to that of cognitive behavioral therapy are becoming increasingly popular alternatives to medication.

In a bid to encourage unemployed youngsters in parts of Scotland to go out and find work, the council asked hypnotherapist to the stars Paul Mckenna to give an inspirational seminar.

The event was staged at Hampden Park in Glasgow and has been organised as part of the SDS Get Ready to work programme, which is aimed at teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 who are not in school or further education.

The programme has sent more than 800 unemployed youngsters to four half day events and is now sending six hundred to Hampden park with Paul Mckenna.

McKenna was allegedly paid a 20,000 fee, which some have criticised as a bad use of the public purse saying the money could have gone toward apprenticeships. On the opposing side, others have said that it is an innovative and forward thinking method of getting through to youngsters.
