Maureen, 66, couldn’t make it through the day with eating a slice of cake after every meal, eating several bars of chocolate in the evening and enjoying biscuits with every cup of tea.
Although short, the 5ft tall grandmother was a plus size 18 and had type 2 diabetes alongside dangerously high blood sugar levels.
Although her doctor had advised her to cut out sweet food, Maureen wasn’t sure she could happily live her life without cake or chocolate.
“Nothing worked. I’m the middle of three sisters and I have always been the fat one. I have always been conscious of my weight but I couldn’t slim for long – I just didn’t have the willpower,” she said.
Then she began to suffer memory loss and do dangerous things like leave the cooker on. When she went to the GP, she was told it could be linked to her weight. When blood sugar levels are high, blood thickening can occur which reduces the amount of oxygen travelling to the brain, affecting memory and concentration.
Maureen decided to take more serious action to improve her health, but felt confused by what she could and could not eat. Then she read about gastric band hypnotherapy in a magazine.
Gastric band hypnotherapy convinces the client they’ve had a gastric band fitted to prevent them from eating too much.
Maureen went ahead with the hypnotherapy and now, six months later, is down to a size 10-12, with a blood sugar level between four and six. She looks younger, has more confidence and no longer suffers from forgetfulness. She no longer eats cake, chocolate or biscuits, and she never craves them.
Her hypnotherapist Linda Johnson says she does not just encourage her clients’ brains to think that the stomach is smaller, she also encourages it to see food as fuel for the body.
She trains her clients to eat the right foods – protein, good fat, fruit, nuts and vegetables to make the body function better.
For many years Linda worked for the NHS at director-level, but she soon gravitated towards hypnotherapy.
She developed an on-going support programme for Maureen so she could incorporate her new belief patterns into her everyday routine. This involved relaxation therapy, a balanced meal plan and a simple exercise regime she could enjoy at home. She was also taught a special technique known as Emotional Freedom Tapping to get rid of negative feelings.
