A hot flush (or hot flash as it is sometimes known) is a symptom brought on by hormone change, typically due to the menopause. Hot flushes can last between 2-30 minutes and causes the sufferer to have feelings of intense heat, sweating and an increased heart rate.
For some, this can be a debilitating symptom of the menopause and affects every-day life. While there are no cures for hot flushes, hypnosis hopes to offer some relief.
Researchers came together from the Mind-Body Medicine Research Laboratory, Baylor University and the University of Texas (to name a few) in order to test this theory. The study assigned 187 postmenopausal women who reported that they have at least seven hot flushes a day into test groups. The test subjects had five clinical hypnosis sessions per week for 12 weeks and were regularly asked to report the frequency and intensity of their hot flushes.
The research revealed that the number of hot flushes reported by those in the hypnosis group reduced significantly in comparison to the control group. This research was published in the journal ‘Menopause’ and concludes that clinical hypnosis can help to reduce the frequency of hot flushes in postmenopausal women.
