But is it healthy? Director of Hays senior finance Nik Pratap believes that this culture of ‘presenteeism’ is damaging for both individuals and employers. Everyone needs a holiday every now and then. It can help you relax, recuperate and even see things from a different perspective. Standing back from a situation can often offer more insight than getting completely immersed.
Mr Pratap recommends handling your leave sensibly by asking for a reasonable amount of time off well in advance, rather than demanding an extended sabbatical in the middle of a big project.
According to another survey, one in 10 employees choose not to take a holiday because they find the idea of handing over their workload to another colleague too stressful. The trick of the handover, according to Mr Pratap, is to tie up loose ends as far as possible and leave your BlackBerry at home so your colleagues have no choice but to tackle any problems themselves – after all, unless you’re running a business single-handedly, everything should still be able to function perfectly well without you.
Once you return to the office, chances are your employers and colleagues will realise just how valuable your presence really is to the business.
Simon Broomer, senior career counsellor at CareerBalance Ltd, says: “If you return to find that your skills and expertise are no longer needed then it’s time to look for another job that offers you new challenges and the opportunity to develop. In this way you can become indispensable to your new employer.”
