‘Mindfulness’ can be defined as a meditation technique involving controlled breathing, deep relaxation and concentration designed to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety.

A ‘Mindfulness at Work’ conference was held earlier this year, managing to attract a number of esteemed speakers including Mark Williams, professor of clinical psychology at Oxford University.
Now occupational health teams are being encouraged to get behind the mindfulness programme to introduce mindfulness into the corporate world.
Beer brand Carlsberg’s vice-president Kenneth Egelund Schmidt said: “Mindfulness is a practical way to cope with all the noise in your head and the noise around you. It’s a way of letting go of it and not letting it control you.”
He explained that by offering a mindfulness programme to his colleagues, he was essentially encouraging them take responsibility for reality rather than shouldering the burden onto him.
One of the biggest challenges faced when introducing mindfulness into a corporate environment is the idea that mindfulness is synonymous with religion and spirituality.
Once people accept mindfulness as a medically sound method for stress-relief, the detrimental effects of stress on the economy (due to lost productivity and employee absenteeism) could be significantly lifted. Scientific studies do show that 10 minutes of meditation five days a week for four weeks can noticeably reduce signs of burnout and increase well-being and creativity.
