According to recent research, being overweight doesn’t just impact our physical health but our brains too.
A recent study compiled by a group of experts has revealed that bulging waistlines could be linked to faster cognitive decline.
Whilst the reasoning behind the findings are unknown, the researchers believe that there could be a link between metabolic changes such as high blood sugar and raised cholesterol – and cognitive decline.
The study in question involved tracking the health of over 6,000 British individuals for a period of a decade.
Those who participated in the study were aged between 35 and 55, and were asked to take a variety of memory and cognitive tests three times during the 10-year period.
The results showed that individuals who were obese and who exhibited unhealthy metabolic changes showed a much faster rate of cognitive decline in comparison to others involved in the study.
Speaking of their findings the researchers said: “More research is needed to look at the effects of genetic factors and also to take into account how long people have been obese and how long they have had these metabolic risk factors and also to look at cognitive test scores spanning adulthood to give us a better understanding of the link between obesity and cognitive function, such as thinking, reasoning and memory.”
With recent research suggesting there may be a link between obesity and Alzheimer’s, these findings are extremely important and will be added to a growing body of research looking at how weight could in fact impact mental as well as physical health.
Shirley Cramer of Alzheimer’s Research UK commented on the latest findings: “We do not yet know why obesity and metabolic abnormality are linked to poorer brain performance, but with obesity levels on the rise, it will be important to delve a little deeper into this association.”
