Well according to recent research published in the British Medical Journal online, the average ex-smoker now gains approximately 5kg within a year of stopping – a much higher amount than the 3kg that is typically quoted.
According to NHS advice on quitting smoking, going smoke-free may result in your appetite and taste improving, which could tempt you into snacking on a more regular basis.
The advice then goes onto say “Any weight gain need only be temporary. Once you’ve stopped smoking, you’ll find it easier to be active and lose any extra weight.”
Whilst for many individuals the weight will indeed drop off after quitting, experts have concerns that the possible weight gain could deter some smokers from trying to quit in the first place.
Past research for instance, has shown that many women are only prepared to tolerate a gain in weight of 2.3kg in order to quit.
Despite the average gain in weight, experts have said that the overall health benefits of giving up smoking still far outweigh those of modest weight gain.
Researchers have said that whilst obesity is associated with an increased risk of many health concerns, a small gain in weight does not increase the risk of death, whilst smoking does.
