Trichotillomania sufferers however, are individuals who suffer from an impulsive control disorder which results in an uncontrollable urge to pull out their own hair, sometimes even during sleep.
Whilst we usually associate The Only Way is Essex star Sam Fairs with huge bambi glamorous lashes, she recently revealed in an episode of the hit TV show that she does in fact suffer from Tricotillomania.
Sam revealed that her habit first started when she was 8 years old, after being told to make a wish as she blew away a stray eyelash.
From then on Sam became unable to control her urge to tug her lashes out, with her sister Billie even remembering waking up to see Sam with bruised eyelids as a result of unconscious eyelash pulling throughout the night.
Years later and the star now has absolutely no natural lashes, which is why she is very rarely spotted without her beloved falsies.
Sam explained that she now tugs at her lashes without really thinking: “It is hard to explain. I do it without thinking. I do it when I am nervous or bored or even when I am asleep. I don’t even realise I am doing it.” She said.
“My mum saw what I was doing but didn’t understand why and wasn’t sure how to stop me. She’d get pretty frustrated with me but I carried on doing it, so in the end she took me to the doctor.”
Whilst Sam reported that her doctor was unable to help, she did also say that seeing a hypnotherapist did work for sometime and her lashes started to grow back once again.
If you suffer from trichotillomania and are looking for help then hypnotherapy could be the answer. Hypnotherapy involves accessing the subconscious mind so that negative habits can be reprogrammed into ones that are positive.
