One in every 30 people in the UK is now classed as morbidly obese, and the NHS budget is starting to feel the strain.
Obese people cost the NHS billions every year in surgical procedures (hip replacements and knee replacements), as well as expensive medication for weight related conditions such as diabetes and cancer. If obesity figures continue to rise, it is expected that by 2050 the NHS will be spending nearly £50 billion every year solely on obese people.
There are a number of ways to deal with Britain’s obesity epidemic. Currently, hospitals are opting for certain preventative measures. For instance, certain NHS trusts are offering morbidly obese individuals surgical procedures such as gastric bands to help them lose weight before the onset of heart disease or joint degeneration.
Although there are always risks involved with surgery, surgeon Roger Ackroyd believes the benefits far outweigh the risks: “If we can invest in this type of surgery now then it saves the NHS money in the long term,” he told the BBC.
In Yorkshire, people with a body mass index of over 45 are being offered a health programme which gives them their very own personal trainer as well as nutritional advice.
Mandy Bennett from Driffield is one of the 50 patients who signed up to the so called ‘Live Well’ scheme and has since lost three stone.
She says maintaining the weight loss is just as important and difficult as achieving it, but that without the NHS support she would still be sitting in front of the television eating unhealthy food and feeling unhappy.
The programme has allowed the number of operations carried out on obese people in the area to drop by 80%. The director of public health in East Riding of Yorkshire, Dr Tim Allison, believes that people should not be so keen to undergo weight loss surgery, but should be prepared to make the effort to change their lifestyles for the better.
