Chronic illness is the worlds leading cause of death

Chronic illness is the worlds leading cause of deathAccording to the World Health Organisation (WHO), chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer are the leading cause of death globally.

The Global Status report also said that smoking was a leading cause of noncommunicable disease, which accounted for more than 36 million deaths in 2008.

Other key findings from the report included the following:

-Around 6m individuals die from tobacco use every year.

-By 2020 the above figure will increase to 7.5m, accounting for 10 per cent of all deaths globally.

-Each year 3.2 million die due to a lack of exercise, 2.8m from obesity and 2.5 from alcohol.

WHO Director General, Dr Margaret Chan, said: “For some countries, it is no exaggeration to describe the situation as an impending disaster; a disaster for health, for society, and most of all for national economies

“Chronic noncommunicable diseases deliver a two-punch blow to development. They cause billions of dollars in losses of national income, and they push millions of people below the poverty line, each and every year.” She said.

The WHO believe that many of these deaths could be prevented with the help of strong smoking legislation and increased efforts to promote a healthy lifestyle.
