Smokers lead ‘unhealthier lifestyles’ than non smokers, study finds

Smokers lead unhealthier lifestylesAccording to the findings of an analysis of 13,000 smokers, ex smokers and those who have never smoked by researchers from Cardiff University and Ash Wales, smokers are more likely to binge drink, have a poor diet and face mental illness.

The study, which analysed the profiles of 13,000 smokers, ex smokers and non smokers found that those who smoke lead unhealthier lifestyles than those who have either managed to quit or those who have never taken up the habit. The researchers found the following:

  • Half of all smokers drink more than official limits recommend compared to 40% of those who have never smoked.
  • 35% of smokers binge drink compared to only 23% of non smokers and 31% of ex smokers.
  • 39% of non smokers eat their recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables each day compared to only 28% of smokers.
  • 8% of non smokers have been treated for a mental illness compared to 14% of smokers, with female smokers almost twice as likely (18%) as male ones (10%) to have had treatment.
  • Another recent study of almost 5,000 Britons also found that those displaying unhealthy behaviours such as smoking, drinking, eating poorly and engaging in very little physical activity lose an average of 12 years off their life by doing so.
