Understanding Hypnotherapy

If your not really sure what hypnotherapy is and would like to find out more about how it could help you and have a positive impact on your life then read on.

In a very small nutshell hypnotherapy is a way of making positive and lasting changes in your life that you have been struggling to make on your own.

How does it differ from stage hypnosis?

The word hypnotherapy will conjure up images of black and white swirls, swinging clocks and the phrase ‘look into my eyes’ for many people. But it is important to note that stage hypnosis is an entirely different profession and is simply for entertainment purposes.

How does it work?

During our everyday lives we constantly slip into little hypnotised states without even realising what it is we are doing. Remember the last time you phased out whilst watching the T.V or arriving at work and not really remembering how we got there? Most of us will experience this day dream like state on a daily basis.

Similarly we also have many habits that we exhibit throughout the day completely unaware of what we are doing. Chewing the end off a pen, biting our nails, tapping our foot. All of these habits were originally formed to be useful. They were are body’s way of helping us not to think about the routine activities in our everyday life.

However, sometimes a habit can become out of control, or our body stores a habit we don’t really want, smoking and over-eating for example.

Hypnotherapy is mainly concerned the subconscious mind and it is through the subconscious mind that it works its magic. Part of treatment will be to relax the conscious mind which will subsequently allow positive suggestions to be given to our unconscious mind. It is these suggestions that will help us to get rid of bad habits, by retraining the mind to form different responses.
