Hypnotherapy for sports performance

Yesterday’s main headlines of England making it through to the final 16 of the World Cup 2010 and Wimbledon’s record breakingly long game between Nicolas Mahut and John Isner will have many of us thinking about sporting performance today.

There has been much talk about England’s first two lacklustre performance’s and many discussions concluded that the team had got themselves into a bit of a psychological pickle. John Terry himself had said absence from their families was ‘beginning to take its psychological toll on the squad’ and with intense pressure in the camp it seems like the blockage was more in their minds than their physical ability. With Wayne Rooney playing eight England games without scoring the general consensus among commentators was that he desperately needs to put one in the net so he gets the belief and fire back in him.

Hypnotherapy is a useful tool for sports performance, helping to improve an individuals mental attitude and encouraging and assisting relaxation by removing those anxieties and worries. For those who are really feeling the pressure, so much so that is paralysing their performance through fear of failure, hypnotherapy will help to remove those negative thoughts and beliefs by accessing your subconscious to reprogramme the mind. Another helpful technique in this instance is visualisation of success which will help individuals to concentrate on positive outcomes.

In the game of snooker, is it known whether any of the top professionals use hypnotherapy? Snooker requires lots of concentration and calm nerves and there a lots of opportunities for a player to use self-hypnosis during a match. Any comment on this would be appreciated, thanks! :)
