18 year old Dan had a huge phobia of needles and was worried about some upcoming shots he was to have at college. His mother suggested that he go for a hypnotherapy session to see if it could help.
Dan was unsure of when his phobia begun but he recalled feeling anxious at the age of 8 or 9 for days before injections were scheduled. His anxiety would increase as the appointment drew nearer.
At Dan’s first hypnotherapy session his hypnotherapist explained to him that the aim would be to discover the origin of the fear.
After being taken into a deeply relaxed state the hypnotherapist began to discuss his past with him. Dan reported feeling a strange sensation and was surprised to find out that his session had lasted an hour as he was unaware of the time passing even thought he was aware of what was happening around him.
Initially he did not recall any relevant memories but then they just popped into his head.
Dan remembered being 5 or 6 and playing on the third floor of his family home. He stepped on a stuffed animal that apparently had a pin in it. The pin stuck in his foot. We think it was a pin because he described it as a needle with a big head.
Dan recalled this incident very vividly and even though he describe his dad pulling the pin out, nether he or Dan’s mother remember it happening.
The next time Dan went for an injection he was able to sit calmly without feeling anxious of nauseas.
