Hypnotherapy for motion sickness

With Christmas just around the corner we are all starting to have visions of packing ourselves into the hatchback along with the presents and the turkey and beginning that long journey down the motorway to grannies, feeling sick all the way.

Motion sickness is a thorn in the side of many a traveller. There is nothing worse than dreading a long commute or a long journey to your summer holiday destination. We try to ward of the effects with traditional preventative cures such as Dramamine, wristbands or pharmacy tablet’s but as with anything, they don’t work for everyone and some have little effect.

Another less traditional alternative you might want to consider is hypnotherapy. The first of many positives is that you won’t have to endure the main effect of the travel sick tablet…tiredness. There is nothing quite as frustrating as reaching your destination after a mammoth journey only to feel too sleepy to do anything.

Hypnosis can apply anyone relief. Research has shown that stress and fear play a huge part in elevating blood pressure and causing tension headaches, dizziness and nausea. In this situation the best thing we can try and do is alleviate these symptoms through relaxing our body. A Hypnotherapist is likely to encourage  a number of steps to help you feel relaxed including:

1. Close your eyes and try to eliminate outside distractions and noise.

2. Take deep and slow breaths

3. Try to imagine yourself in a peaceful and calm setting, or a familiar place which makes you feel relaxed, perhaps your favourite chair at home reading a book or walking through a peaceful park.

Continue taking slow and deep breathes, focussing on your familier place. Try and practice this routine a few times before taking your journey. Another helpful method that a hypnotherapist might encourage is visualising yourself taking your actual trip. This is known as future pacing and works on the basis that you will become what you think.

Bon Voyage!
