Hypnotherapy helps with dentist phobia

An article on the Metro website highlights one of the nation’s biggest fears – going to the dentist, and how neglecting teeth can have negative results on other areas oh health too.

There are strong links with good dental health preventing strokes, diabetets and heart disease. However, for many a trip to the dentist can prove too much.

However, a dental practice in Covent Garden has introduced the option of having a hypnotherapy session before taking a seat in the dentist’s chair. For an extra fee, the patient can have a 40 minute hypnotherapy session before their treatment to help them relax.

Gemma Godman, 27, company director, said: “When I last had a tooth out, the dentist held my face with one hand and used his body weight to pull my tooth out – the cracking was very loud. While under hypnosis, the therapist repeated positive statements and experiences and made me imagine happy images.

“I learnt to hold my finger and thumb to concentrate on conscious relaxation and did the same throughout the procedure. ”

Great stuff. I did a couple of courses a few years ago and found hypnotherapy very useful in my practice – although time restrictions made it difficult on the NHS. Now, however, I have set up a private practice and I’m keen to build up the hypnotherapy side of it. I’m a bit out of practice, though. Can anyone suggest a good refresher course?
