Drinking whilst pregnant gives child a taste of alcohol
There’s been a lot of mixed advice on drinking during pregnancy recently, and the latest news again comes down on the side of not drinking at all, reports The Telegraph.
Women who drink whilst pregnant can give their unborn child a taste for alcohol, reducing the bitterness of it, making them more likely to drink later in life. This is supported by other studies which have shown the younger someone has their first drink, the more likely they are to become addicted to alcohol.
Exposure to alcohol before birth seems to make the smell and taste of it more appealing, which is another reason for expectant mothers abstaining from alcohol completely during their pregnancy.
The study was carried out by the State University of New York Upstate Medical University, and they said: “Our findings have broad implications for the relationship between maternal patterns of drug use, child development and postnatal vulnerability.”
