Vitamin D deficiency linked to MS
A vitamin D deficiency could increase the risk of MS, according to an article on the Independent website.
Scientists say that the chance of getting MS is linked to vitamin D levels before and after birth, and therefore mothers should take vitamin D supplements during pregnancy, and make sure their child also takes supplements.
Bith environmental and genetic factors affect whether or not someone will have MS, and in particular lack of sunshine is a known factor, and vitamin D is produced by sunlight’s reaction on the skin.
Professor George Ebers, from Oxford University, who lead the study said: “We have known for a long time that genes and environment determine MS risk. Here we show that the main environmental risk candidate – vitamin D – and the main gene region are directly linked and interact.”
